From 2025 onwards, the European Union is set to expand its Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) to cover a broader range of goods traded within and across its borders. In parallel, the EU will begin enforcing the Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) from December 2024, a move that directly impacts global supply chains dealing with commodities such as wood, rubber, cocoa, soy, palm oil, and related products.

These policy changes are part of a wider effort to ensure that products sold within the EU are not only high-performing and durable but also sustainably and legally sourced. While the long-term goal is environmental protection and ethical trade, the immediate challenge for businesses lies in understanding and meeting these evolving regulatory requirements.

At NG Terminal, we provide the logistics, customs compliance, and regulatory expertise needed to help businesses prepare their goods for smooth entry into the EU market—before they ship.

Understanding the EUDR: What Is Changing?

The EUDR (EU Regulation 2023/1115) is the European Union’s legislative response to global deforestation. It mandates that companies trading in specific commodities must demonstrate that their goods:

  • Are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation after 31 December 2020
  • Were produced legally in accordance with the laws of the country of origin
  • Are traceable to the precise production plot

This affects the following high-risk commodities and their derivatives:

  • Cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, wood, and rubber
  • Products containing or derived from these, such as furniture, paper goods, tyres, leather, chocolate, foodstuffs, cosmetics, and biofuels

Whether being imported into the EU, traded within the EU, or exported from the EU, every relevant consignment must be accompanied by a due diligence statement submitted to a central EU database.

Details on the due diligence statement requirements can be found in the official regulation text, and background resources are available via the European Commission.

Expanding Ecodesign Regulations: 2025–2030

In addition to EUDR, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is widening its scope from energy-related products to nearly all goods sold on the EU market. The updated framework will impose requirements relating to:

  • Durability and reparability
  • Recyclability and resource efficiency
  • Environmental footprint transparency
  • Restrictions on harmful substances

Manufacturers and importers will be required to gather more detailed product lifecycle data and share it via a digital product passport, adding another layer of compliance to be managed.

How NG Terminal Helps Businesses Stay Compliant

With complex declarations, traceability documentation, and environmental due diligence now part of the customs workflow, businesses must adapt quickly—or risk rejection of their goods at EU borders.

NG Terminal offers end-to-end support to help mitigate that risk:

  1. Pre-shipment Compliance Checks

We review shipment documentation before departure to assess its readiness under EUDR and ecodesign rules. This reduces the likelihood of rejection or costly reworks.

  1. Customs Brokerage with Regulatory Expertise

Our customs clearance specialists are trained to interpret both EUDR and ESPR documentation, ensuring your goods clear entry smoothly.

  1. Warehousing and Holding Support near Heathrow (LHR)

NGT’s bonded warehouse services allow us to hold, inspect, and even repackage cargo before customs declaration. This is especially useful for goods requiring labelling changes or awaiting final documentation.

  1. Ongoing Consultation and Regulatory Updates

As regulations evolve between now and 2030, NG Terminal will continue to provide timely guidance so our clients remain ahead of compliance shifts.

Preparing Your Supply Chain: Now Is the Time

For suppliers and logistics partners, early preparation is key. Mapping your supply chain, verifying sources, and generating the correct declarations will not only ensure compliance but also build resilience and trust across your markets.

At NG Terminal, we support global businesses trading with the EU to navigate environmental, customs, and technical barriers with confidence. From compliance reviews to bonded storage and final-mile delivery, we ensure your products meet the mark.
