What’s Changing at Heathrow?

In May, the British International Freight Association – BIFAlaunched a new advisory board to help steer Heathrow’s cargo transformation. The goal? To modernise one of the world’s most important air freight hubs and finally fix the long-standing pain points that logistics professionals know all too well.

Heathrow handles over 1.4 million tonnes of cargo each year, accounting for nearly 30% of the UK’s non-EU trade by value (UK GOV, 2025).  Even small improvements to infrastructure can have a huge impact across the national supply chain. That’s why this redevelopment matters, and why it’s being watched closely across the industry.

Heathrow’s redevelopment will focus on:

  • Upgraded cargo facilities to boost speed, safety and capacity
  • Integrated digital systems for smarter freight management
  • Better access across road, rail, and air connections
  • Mitigating construction disruption to freight flow
  • Stronger collaboration across the supply chain

As part of the advisory group’s official announcement, BIFA director general, steve parker, made the following statement: “On behalf of our members, BIFA is already working closely with the airport to support its ambitious plans to deliver a fundamental change to the way cargo operates at the airport”– indicating that the advisory will be taking on a more central role in shaping best practices, developing representation methods, and modernising freight systems.

Three Ways To Plan For The Redevelopment

Heathrow’s cargo redevelopment will be a multi-year project, but the time to prepare is now. Here are three actions your business can take today to stay ahead of disruption:

  1. Map your Heathrow exposure:Review your current freight volumes moving through Heathrow. Identify which shipments, customers, or services would be impacted by construction delays, access changes, or processing shifts.
  2. Strengthen your multimodal options:Start building flexibility into your routing. Whether it’s road-to-air, sea-to-air, or rail connections, having alternative flows in place will help avoid bottlenecks and maintain delivery SLAs.
  3. Align your systems with digital freight trends:Heathrow’s future is digital, and paper-based processes won’t keep up. NG Terminal pairs customs expertise with in-house software that supports full EDI and API integration, ensuring seamless platform connectivity and real-time cargo visibility.

Looking Ahead: A More Agile Supply Chain Starts Now

The Heathrow cargo overhaul represents a shift in how UK trade will operate, and it won’t wait for anyone to catch up. That’s why NG Terminal is already helping clients rework their strategies, reduce risk, and build resilience.

Don’t wait for the disruption to hit. Let’s future-proof your freight operation — together.
