Preighter flights means using passenger aircraft to operate cargo-in-the-cabin flights. It started early 2020 since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

Now they are rare sights to be seen.

At the end of July 2022, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has stopped its preighter exemptions as number of international travellers return to normal. The percentage of preighters compare with freighters and passenger flights dropped from its peak 18% to 1% or less in August 2022.

Increased belly capacity, reduce in demands, war in Ukraine all contributed to this decision. These factors will continue to play key roles in what might lie ahead. Nevertheless, preighter marks an era when freight forwarders find innovative logistics solutions facing unprecedented challenges. Flexibility and adaptability will be considered if one wishes to thrive in this ever-changing market environment.

Brexit and UK global trade?

Back to the UK, according to the October report by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), UK to EU goods trade is reduced by 16% and trade from the EU to UK by 20% relative to the scenario in which Brexit had not occurred. The findings of the report might seem alarming; however, the report also points out that for export of goods from the UK to other part of the world has actually been growing gradually.

Although it is difficult to prove the correlation between Brexit and the drop in trade volume, the statistics shows despite Brexit, UK businesses are exploring other ways to penetrate global markets outside of EU.
